Radon Facts

Radon comes from the natural (radioactive) breakdown of uranium in the soil, rock and water and gets into the air you breathe. Radon can be found all over the U.S (every state). It can get into any type of building – homes, offices, and schools – and result in a high indoor radon level. It doesn’t matter whether your house has a basement, concrete slab, or crawl space – any one of these can have high radon concentrations.

Radon is a radioactive gas which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers.  You cannot see, smell, or taste it.  Radon concentrations inside can be ten times higher in the winter.

High levels of radon are found in 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. (7%).  It is found in 1 in 2 to 5 homes in our area of East Tennessee and the Appalachian Mountains (20% to 50%).  Radon is found in every county in Tennessee.

The only way to know if radon is a problem is to test your home.  It is easy and inexpensive.  The U.S. Surgeon General and EPA recommend that all homes be tested.

Approximately 22, 000 people die of lung cancer caused by radon every year in the U.S.

Orion Environmental Solutions is certified by the NRPP for radon testing and listed on the NRPP and AARST websites.  Radon testing in Knox County, Sevier County, Anderson County, Blount County, East Tennessee, and other southeast states.

Orion’s professional methods and results are guaranteed.

If you have high levels of radon in your home (at or above 4.0 pCi/L) – your radon problem can be fixed. Low concentration exposure over a longer period of time is more deadly than high concentration exposure over short periods of time.  Radon reduction systems work, and they are not extremely costly. Even very high levels of radon can be reduced to acceptable levels. Costs for radon mitigation systems in single family residences range from $1,200.00 - $2,500.00 for standard systems.

EPA's Map of Radon Zones assigns each of the Tennessee and other state counties in the U.S. to one of three zones based on radon potential.

Knox County, Sevier County, Anderson County, Blount County, Hamblen County and several other East Tennessee counties are Zone 1 (Average indoor radon levels ranges from 4.2 to 9.9 pCi/L).
